Finding – glaucoma gene is a world first

The discovery was made after a survey of 4,500 patients from Nepal and India and it will replace routine monitoring and hit-or-miss treatments. The researchers discovered that 18% of the population has risk versions of the two genes, making them three times more likely to develop severe glaucoma.

Glaucoma is the umbrella term for a group of eye illnesses that cause irreversible loss of peripheral vision and are frequently accompanied with excessive pressure building up inside the eyeball. It is the biggest cause of permanent blindness in the world, half of whom are currently untreated.

The most common type of glaucoma is open angle glaucoma, but it is poorly understood and difficult to diagnose in its early stages, thus many instances go untreated until permanent vision loss occurs.
